With the cost of living increasing, many people who thought they could live a comfortable life on their pension discover that they have to find new ways to afford retirement. Fortunately, there are numerous ways for retired individuals to earn extra income without having to commit to a formal job.

Before you begin earning extra retirement income, research the limits of your retirement income. Some plans, especially Medicare or Social Security benefits can be affected by the extra income you earn. So, before finding a way to earn extra income, you must consider the effect the extra money will have.

Potential earnings that are substantially more than the benefits makes the extra time and effort worthwhile. However, if those earnings aren’t significantly more, you may want to think again about earning extra retirement income.

Also, look at the amount of time and effort the job may take. Some jobs or opportunities take substantially more than it is worth. This is especially true if you are giving up some of your benefits to make the money. A high impact position is sometimes more expensive in the toll it takes on the body. In that case, you actually lose income due to health issues that generate bills.

To find the right income for you, try thinking of the things you enjoy doing. You can then look for income opportunities in those areas. People who work in activities that they enjoy are more likely to stick with the job or position. Meanwhile, an unpleasant job or working environment can have negative effects on your health and productivity.

Therefore, if you enjoy making crafts, for instance, you can make and sell them at local craft shows. Those who enjoy traveling, consider finding a position where you can write reviews for a travel magazine. Explore your passion, you’ll be surprised to find a way earn while doing it.

A part time job is also a viable option for retirees who want to make some extra money. You must not mind having to report to a job on a schedule, however. Some hospitals, for example, offer retirees part time positions as greeters or phone operators. Some mass merchants have door greeters, an ideal position for a retiree who can stand for only a few hours at a time.

Seasonal jobs are another option. Wrapping presents Christmastime is a popular job at malls or department stores. These jobs are fun for those who enjoy crafts. Helping with pictures of Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny is ideal for a person who enjoys working with children.

There are ways to earn money without working. Investing in short term low risk funds takes little effort, but a lot of cash to begin. Newcomers to investing should look for money markets and certificates of deposit. These are considered low risk investment funds. If you have money that you don’t mind losing, short term high risk funds may net you some income.

An even more high-risk option for retirees who own a home is a reverse mortgage. It may be the answer to making extra retirement income, if you meet certain requirements. This type of mortgage pulls equity out of your home. Before you choose this option to get money, you should consult with an estate planner and a financial adviser to determine how it can affect you and your families after you pass on.

There are many ways to earn extra income after you retire. Finding them will take some effort, but discovering a second career, and a second source of funding, is well worth it.
